I Am No Emily Dickinson

Poetry By Christina Coobatis

Arctic Monkeys Opening For The Black Keys in Cleveland

“All the pretty visitors
Came and waved their arms
And cast
The shadow of a snake pit
On the wall.”

Six years I spent
Watching Sheffield boys —
Televised
And streaming live —
Stand on stages like
Their shoes were
Stone,
Whether from
Shyness
Or some kind of
Strokes-inspired
Dryness
I was never
Quite sure.

Last night, I sat
Right in the same room
As those boys
And realized that
They
Spent those six years
Transforming from
Rock into
Stars.

I think I was one of the only people who went to The Black Keys concert more to see the Arctic Monkeys, and in my opinion, they blew the opening act away. The greatest test of self-control I’ve ever had to endure was to sit down in a seat, while Alex Turner sang songs from my childhood right before me. It was incredible to see how much of a stage presence he and the rest of the band have gained; I felt proud, as if I knew them personally.

Tonight, I return to Cleveland to see Saul Williams perform at The Grog Shop! Can’t wait.
